Last Saturday, May 3rd, The Club had the pleasure of hosting the President Office’s Spring Commencement Dinner. The Ohio State University’s Interim President, Joseph A. Alutto and honorary guests were in attendance celebrating the completion of another academic school year. With our Club being located in the heart of campus, our facility acted as the perfect venue to welcome guests and showcase the historic traditions of Ohio State. On the eve of Spring Commencement, friends and family gathered to honor those who have been awarded Honorary Degrees and Distinguished Service Awards. Barry R. Bloom, Doctor of Science and Chris Matthews, Doctor of Communications were awarded Honorary Degrees, while John B. Gerlach, Jr and Mac A. Stewart were awarded Distinguished Service Awards. The evening began with a standing reception offering light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails with live music performances by Robert Mason, OSU Senior majoring in Jazz Studies, on the piano and the OSU Women’s Glee Club. Commencement Speaker, Chris Matthews, practiced his “OH-IO” while singing along with the Women’s Glee Club’s spirited rendition of Carmen Ohio and got a small taste of what it is like to be a “Buckeye”. Guests then migrated to our Main Dining Room where they enjoyed an innovative fine dining experience and partook in the awards ceremony.
When designing the menu for this special event, we wanted to arrange selections that included some of President Alutto’s favorite meals, innovative preparation techniques and the fresh flavors of the season. Combining all of these elements into a menu that flowed nicely and was appealing to a diverse group of guests was an exciting challenge for Executive Chef, Josh Harris. By swapping the traditional salad with a housemade pasta small plate, serving simply prepared halibut with seasonal sides and creating a chocolate risotto dessert with deconstructed sweet cream and dehydrated fruit, Chef was able to cater to the guest of honor’s preferences and add some flare to the upscale evening.
