One hundred and twelve. This seemingly random number has a very significant meaning to the Buckeye State and that state up north. One hundred and twelve times the biggest sports rivalry has been played out on the gridiron since 1897. One hundred and twelve years fans have gathered to cheer on the Buckeyes against the Wolverines. One hundred and twelve times one of these programs has reigned victorious while the other went home with disappointment and contempt in their hearts. Saturday, November 26th, 2016, will mark game one hundred and thirteen.
(Ohio State All-American halfback Chic Harley scored on a 40-yard run in OSU’s first series victory in 1919)
Being the biggest rivalry in sports, “The Game” is obviously a draw for very large crowds. The first football game to ever be attended by more than 100,000 fans was the Ohio State vs TTUN game in 1957. For nearly the past three decades, the average attendance for this game has remained over 100,000 each year. These crowds have witnessed 47 Ohio State wins and 6 ties, and as many will tell you, there’s nothing like being with 100,000 others cheering on your favorite team on the field and watching them get that W.
Home game days here at The Club are always met with an electric atmosphere as well. As one of our most popular member events, The Club is always filling up before kickoff for some delicious tailgate foods. Whether you’re in the mood for more classic tailgate fare in Colleagues, like Burgers, Nachos, and BBQ, or you want something a little more refined in our Main Dining Room, like Carved Prime Rib, Roasted Ancho Chili Chicken, or Toasted Pierogies, we’ve got a little something to please everyone.
Speaking of tailgate foods, we thought we would share the personal favorites of our staff here at The Club, and for those of you who won’t be joining us, hopefully inspire some menus for the big game!
Jeff White, Executive Director- Ribs and Chicken Wings with his own homemade Apple Butter Habañero BBQ Sauce. Don’t ask him for the recipe though, he just made it up himself!
Bill Hiser, Operations Manager- Chili, Doritos, Crunchy Chicken Strips with Mild or BBQ Sauce, Rotel Sausage Dip with Fritos, and ho-hos for dessert. Tailgate food is so great, he can’t choose just one!
Sara Tennyson, Director of Membership- Veggie Nachos with all of the toppings; cheese, sour cream, black beans, jalapenos, more cheese, onions, olives, tomatoes, salsa, and guacamole.
Brianne Mitchell, Membership Specialist-Loaded Fries. The crisp ones that come piled with melted cheese, bacon, jalapenos, and ranch on the side. Optional- pouring chili over the top always gives it a hearty kick!
Victoria Figliomeni, Catering Coordinator- Hormel Dip. Cream cheese and Hormel chili topped with cheese. You can add banana peppers too if you’d like! Then bake it all at 350 degrees until it’s bubbly and golden, and serve with chips!
Jonathan Thompson, Assistant Manager- Buffalo Chicken Dip. Easy to make and absolutely delicious!
Taylor Beranek, Assistant Manager- Fried Chicken. She doesn’t frequent many tailgates, but this is definitely a classic.
Grace Stupeck, Colleagues Supervisor- Spicy Garlic Buffalo Wings. Buffalo wings are such a tailgate staple, and also a favorite of Jeff Oden on our Culinary Team.
Stephanie Jones, Business Office Manager- Veggies and Dip. Radishes, Broccoli, Carrots, Celery, and a good Red Pepper Hummus. Keepin’ it delicious AND healthy. I think we can all appreciate that! She also enjoys the Venison Summer Sausage that her husband and kids make themselves.
So whether you’re here at The Club, out on campus, or watching our beloved Buckeyes play from another part of the nation or the world, we hope you get to enjoy some delicious food while Brutus fights that rodent on the 26th! GO BUCKS! O-H!
